Task 4 - Analysis of a Game Genre

Analysis of Action and Shooter games

In this article I will unpack action and shooter games. These will be Battlefield 3, Call of Duty and Homefront. Battlefield 3 is a first person shooter, As is the other two games, Homefront and Call Of Duty, They are structured mostly the same, The overall gameplay of the games, Play the same and they have no severe differences but you can still go in Third person and first person in all of the three game titles. First person and Third person shooters normally attract the teenage audience mostly, All three of the games combine a collection of Co-op, Single player and Multiplayer combined to make the game. You can play all these games on Multi platform consoles and can use either a controller or a keyboard and mouse to play it. All of them have an aggressive feel to it, Including the darkness and no bright colours overall in it. The main characters are normally really aggressive too and soldier like. These games can also get addicting and influence teenage minds, This is called the Hypodermic Needle, Where the person is influenced by what they see. But if people start going round shooting people and acting like the characters in here, It won't be the best.. These game titles have a lot other themes including with them too, Including horror, Thriller and many others can be labelled as puzzle, adventure and survival. Such as Call Of Duty zombies is a Survival minigame inputted into the game. Most of the other games have other aspects of game modes inside them too which fall into lots of different themes and categories.

Task 2- Audience Response To Products

The Hypodermic Needle model
The "Magic Bullet" or "Hypodermic Needle Theory" of direct influence effects was not as widely accepted by scholars as many books on mass communication indicate. The hypodermic needle model is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver. The model is rooted in 1930s behaviorism and is largely considered obsolete today. The phrasing "hypodermic needle" is meant to give a mental image of the direct, strategic, and planned infusion of a message into an individual. But as research methodology became more highly developed, it became apparent that the media had selective influences on people .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypodermic_needle_model

Innoculation Model
Inoculation Theory was developed by social psychologist William J. McGuire in 19

61 to explain more about how attitudes and beliefs change, and more importantly, how to keep original attitudes and beliefs consistent in the face of persuasion attempts. Inoculation Theory continues to be studied today by communicationsocial psychology, and social science researchers. The theory has been assessed in varied context, including politics (Pfau et al., 1990), health campaigns (Pfau & VanBockern, 1994), and marketing (Compton & Pfau, 2004), among others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inoculation_theory

Two Step Model
The two-step flow of communication or Multistep Flow Model, says that most people form their opinions under the influence of opinion leaders, who in turn are influenced by themass media. So according to this model, ideas flow from mass media to opinion leaders, and from them to a wider population. Also known as the Multistep Flow Model is a theory based on a 1940s study on social influence that states that media effects are indirectly established through the personal influence of opinion leaders. The majority of people receive much of their information and are influenced by the media secondhand, through the personal influence of opinion leaders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-step_flow_of_communication

Task 1 - Defining Audiences For Products

Quantitative Research
The quantitative researcher asks a specific, narrow question and collects numerical data from participants who answer the question. The researcher analyses the data with the help of statistics. The researcher is hoping the numbers will yield an unbiased result that can be generalized to some larger population. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/mst/math/instructrec/instructrec_files/pants_chart.gif
Qualitative Research
Qualitative research, on the other hand, asks broad questions and collects word data from participants. The researcher looks for themes and describes the information in themes and patterns exclusive to that set of participants. http://www.lightship.com.au/images/Staff_Survey_Graph_gif.GIF?889

Audience Profiling
Audience Profiling is a task all games publishers need to perform when creating a new product to launch onto the market. When defining an audience, factors that must be considered include:
Age, Gender, Race and Sexuality
Education
Occupation
Annual Income
Disposable Income
Current Lifestyle / Aspirational or Desired  Lifestyle
Culture
Media Interests
Buying Habits
Loyalty to Brands
